Shinnai Meets Puppetry World Premiere @ Japan Society, NYC!

I am thrilled to announce the premiere of Shinnai Meets Puppetry: One Night in Winter & The Peony Lantern on November 7-9, 2024, at the Japan Society in New York City. 

Since I became an accredited master of shinnai-bushi in 2019, my mission has been to introduce this Japanese traditional song-storytelling to a global audience. In collaboration with my friends, New York puppeteers Rowan Magee and Emma Wiseman, we expanded our imagination and worked on the visual accompaniment to these stories, incorporating puppetry experiments.

11月7日〜9日の三日間、ニューヨークのジャパン・ソサエティで新作「新内ミーツ人形劇：冬の夜話 & 牡丹燈籠」を初演します。新内節を海外の人にも気軽に楽しんでもらうために、人形劇を組み合わせらどうだろう？　そんなアイディアからはじまったコラボレーション。アメリカの人形師ローワン・マギー、エマ・ワイズマンと私の三人のチームが文化の違いを超えた想像力と新しい人形テクニックを駆使して、二つの新内節「冬の夜話」と「牡丹燈籠」（岡本文弥作品）の「人形劇化」に挑戦します。

『新内ミーツ人形劇：冬の夜話 & 牡丹燈籠』が2024ジム・ヘンソン財団の公演助成とユージン・オニール・センター・レジデンシーに選ばれました。ジム・ヘンソン財団はアメリカの人形劇シーンの中核団体で、この助成を受けるのは人形劇をやっている人にとって、とても嬉しくワクワクすることなのです。感謝！！！

Nekaa Lab is featured at Polish magazine Teatr Lalek!

The first cargo of the New Year brought me a happy object - a puppetry magazine!

Polish renowned puppetry magazine Teatr Lalek (co-published by the UNIMA Poland and the Book Institute) featured an article on my works at Nekaa Lab. The author of the article is Filip Jaśkiewicz. He is a talented object artist and researcher on object performances. Thank you, Filip, for listening to Nekaa Lab’s “small” voices and being open and playful to discover our secrets. I am so thrilled that the idea of performance through objects (and new puppetry) is expanding and connecting people across the globe.

嬉しい初荷がポーランドから届きました — 人形劇雑誌！

ポーランドの人形劇専門誌「Teatr Lalek」（ウニマ・ポーランド & ブック・インスティチュート発行）にNekaa Labでの私の作品についての評論記事が載りました。

筆者はポーランド人の新進気鋭のオブジェクト・アーティストで研究家のFilip Jaśkiewiczさん。アーティストならではの視点でネカア・ラボの作品の本質にぐいぐい迫ってくれています。

オブジェクトを通して表現する世界観の輪が、地球のあちこちに繋がって、どんどん広がってきて楽しいです。

ヒツジとうさぎは自分たちのことが書いてある記事に興味津々。

An evening of work-in-progress presentation of Shinnai Meets Puppetry: The Peony Lantern, the second chapter of the ongoing project to introduce shinnai-bushi tradition (song-storytelling from Japan accompanied by shamisen music) with visual accompaniment of puppetry creation.

The Peony Lantern is a shinnai-bushi adaptation by Master Okamoto Bunya (1895-1996) of a famous fantastical ghost love story, depicting the sorrow of a woman-in-love facing an unfaithful lover. This presentation is to share the outcome of the week-long residency at FiveMyles, a collaboration between lead puppeteer/designer Emma Wiseman, puppeteer/designer Rowan Magee, and artist/song-storyteller Okamoto Miya (a.k.a. Nekaa Lab, Sachiyo Takahashi), experimenting with light and shadow in search of new vocabularies of shadow puppetry. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session, sharing the cultural and artistic connotations of the designs of the work.

Café Royal Cultural Foundation NYC 2022 Fall Performance Grant

I am happy to announce that I have been awarded the Café Royal Cultural Foundation NYC 2022 Fall Performance Grant. 

I am very excited to work on my new experimental puppetry-music-storytelling, The Emotions: Equinox, collaborating with Object Designer / Video Designer Yudam Hyung-Seok Jeon and Puppet Builder and Puppeteer Emma Wiseman, with the support of this grant. The work is a reimagined folk festival celebrating the exact moment of the equinox with the audience after the long pause of the pandemic. Stay tuned!

The Emotions: Equinox will premiere at HERE, NYC, on March 22-23, 2023, as a part of a two act show, The Emotions, co-conceived with gamin, as a culmination of three years of residency at HERE.

Upcoming Show: One Night in Winter @ Puppetopia

Sachiyo will perform this week from May 11 to 15, 2022, as Okamoto Miya at Puppetopia at HERE Arts Centre, NYC. It is a work-in-progress of One Night in Winter, the first chapter of Shinnai Meets Puppetry - a project to introduce the world of Shinnai-bushi to international audiences through puppetry.

Sachiyo worked with Brooklyn-based puppet artist Rowan Magee to develop this work. It's a story of a lonely old man who receives a surprise visit from Tanuki (a Japanese raccoon dog) on a cold winter night.

This adaptation of the song by great master Okamoto Bunya is performed by Sachiyo Takahashi, Rowan Magee, and Emma Wiseman.

Please come and meet our Tanuki created by Rowan. It is a light, fun piece to cheer you up!

The evening is a shared bill with two other remarkable puppet works.

This work is made possible by a grant from the Jim Henson Foundation, Puppetry at the Carriage House (PATCH) residency funded by the Jane Henson Foundation and Dream Music Puppetry at HERE.
